Stockholm’s Underground Art Museum, Really !

Metro Art

My new found obsession is Scandinavuan design. The minimalistic and clean lines  seen in their fashion, home design and architecture, is my vision of Scandinavian countries.

You can just imagine how excited I was discovering metro art, or was I really ?

Tunnelbana

Stockholm’s metro or tunnelbana has 100 station.  The underground metro is  decorated in works of art ranging from sculptures, paintings, rocks or children’s art . Over 150 local artists have participated in this metro art.In Europe it is the most beautiful tunnelbana.

On my 2nd day in Stockholm, I bought a 90  minute metro card to fulfill my curiosity . I was ready and excited to  explore this underground art museum. Well, let me just say  it was not at all what I expected.

I appreciate  good art, almost any art.No art is “ugly” especially when art is self expression. Right?

I chose the blue line and every station was decorated in the most unusual & bizarre  way  so incongruous to Scandi design, in fact that is what I expected. Minimal ,chic and monochromatic art just like their designs I saw . It was  so uncharacteristic of Sweden.

Underground Museum

The underground museum has a more  playground feel to it where you can go to escape everyday life even if it’s just going to work. Perhaps creating this art surrounding the average commuter facilitates the monotony of working life we all endure.

Whatever the reason, the Swedes  are smart . Art is therapy for your soul so  the average commuter is surrounded by art at least 1 hour per day.

No wonder Scandinavian countries are the happiest in the world.
